The tarush trek
21 days / 20 nights
This unique journey takes you to the northern end of the Cordillera Blanca, where foreigners seldom venture.
Along the way, you will discover :
- the deep gorges of the Cañon del Pato
- two traditional villages, Quitaracsa and Colcabamba, where our muleteers will introduce you to their families
- a wonderful diversity of landscapes, from dry grasslands and high altitude passes to lush warm valleys
- the town of Pomabamba, with its red clay roof-tiles and thermal baths
The village of Quitaracsa still remains in relative isolation. It is composed of various house clusters, built around a large open space used for communal activities. Traditions hold firm here, as do the local crafts, such as weaving and woodcarving.
The Carhuaz market offers an amazing array of produce from different ecological zones.
Tarush (Hippocamelus antisensis)
Local Belief: This Andean deer is said to start off avalanches by blowing air through its nostrils!
